My Old Papers

During the graduate school days. August 2012.

Me as a graduate student. August 2012.

One day, I intentionally hit Delete on a few folders containing much of my old graduate work from King's College London and the Eastman School of Music. For one reason or another, I decided it was time to close the book on that stuff forever, and that I never wanted to see any of it ever again.

Then I wanted to see it again.

It could be that the act of sharing my extant graduate work online is me making sure I hold on a little tighter to an important period in my life. These papers represent many hours of research and writing! I think more than that, though, it is my hope that one day, some younger musicians might stumble across these papers and find something useful in them, even if it's just as a way of learning about another, better source.

Several of the papers are rather niche, and as of the present, there isn't a ton out there in the music theory literature about Brad Mehldau, Steely Dan, or Levi ben Gershom. So, maybe there's something here that will be of use to future students.

A note on the texts

Papers are listed below. I converted each original Word file to HTML and played with it until it didn't look like complete trash online. Some of the original formatting has not survived, but nothing is unreadable. A few examples are lost, but most are included as PDFs. I adjusted some of the most embarrassing mistakes and ungraceful things, but for the most part, these are as they were. To several I have added new personal reflections and recollections.
